Problogger getting a new logo: bad idea?
Aug 09 2007
The blogging world is abuzz this morning with news that the Problogger is getting a new theme and logo.
He is changing from this:

To this:

This raises a very interesting question that I thought we should look at here:
Is changing your firm’s trademark ever a good idea?
When I first heard that the Problogger was changing his logo I was very very sceptical. I couldn’t figure out why he would change a logo that is very well associated with the site he runs and his own brand. After 4 years of a business degree I couldn’t really come up with anything.
The only reasons that I can think of as to why someone would change their trademark are:
1. Their brand has been associated with something bad like a foodpoisoning scare or plane crash.
2. Their trademark has infringed on copyright and they have been legally forced to change it.
3. Their trademark is not communicating their brand well enough to the public.
And as far as I can tell the Problogger trademark is doing none of these.
I am all for Problogger getting a new site design. It is messy, cheap looking and cluttered. What I do not understand, however, is why he would change his logo for something new when the old one is working fine and so well associated with his brand?
Any ideas?
