Putting your family before business
Aug 16 2007
There is an interesting habit in the western world - business people and those busy making money often forget the importance of their family. They ship their parents off to old-folks homes and they chuck their children in day-care and hardly ever see them.
The reason I find this interesting is because I have not seen it anywhere else in the EASTERN world. I have been to India, China, Singapore, etc. and in those places you rarely see or hear about a father who is never home or who ignores his family.
China, in particular, has a strong sense of family. The old people are respected as elders and are invited to stay in the children’s home when they are too old to look after themselves. It is seen as an honourable service - one should repay the kindness that they have shown you over the years.
I think we in the west should take a hint from the eastern practices of having a close family. How often do you miss tucking your kids into bed because you were at a meeting? Is that extra contract more important than seeing your kids on the weekend? I hope these are questions you ask yourself.
